Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a long charge and discharge cycle life, which is suitable to use a non-aqueous electrolyte containing γ-butyrolactone. SOLUTION: The non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery which is equipped with a positive electrode, a negative electrode which contains carbon material and the non-aqueous electrolyte, is characterised in that the surface area of the negative electrode is chosen to be within a range of 0.03 to 0.06 m2/cm2when specific surface area of the carbon material is less than 1 m2/g, the surface area of the negative electrode is chosen to be within a range of 0.02 to 0.04 m2/cm2when the specific surface area of the carbon material is 1 m2/g or more and less than 10 m2/g, and the surface area of the negative electrode is chosen to be within a range of 0.005 to 0.03 m2/cm2when the specific surface area of the carbon material is 10 m2/g or more.
