Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video signal processor which improves the average luminance and image quality at all times even when images of various kinds of video sources are received. SOLUTION: The video signal processor has a luminance control section for controlling the luminance by controlling the number of the sustain discharge pulses of a plasma display panel, a level detecting section 4 for detecting the average level of an input video signal and a sustain discharge current detecting section 8 for detecting the sustain discharge current in a driving section 6 of the plasma display panel 7. The luminance and electric power are adaptively controlled in a luminance control section 5 according to the level of the input video signal and the current of the driving section 6, thereby realizing improvement in the average luminance in the limited number of half grays without the occurrence of the abrupt change in gray scales and luminance change according to a video scene.
