Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the following inconvenience; conventionally, it has taken a long waiting time before providing information such as the video and sound of an optical disk irrespective of the kinds of inserted optical disks. SOLUTION: The recording medium discriminating device is provided with: a microcomputer or the like (6) for discriminating the number of recording layers in an optical disk (1) on the basis of the reflected light of the light beam (9) from the optical disk (1); the microcomputer or the like (6) for identifying the optical disk (1) as the one (1) provided with two or more recording layers when the number of the recording layers is judged as more than one; the microcomputer or the like (6) for discriminating the shape of the recording track in the recording layer on the basis of the reflected light when the number of the recording layers is judged as one; and the microcomputer or the like (6) for identifying the type of the optical disk (1) with the single recording layer by further sub-dividing the type thereof on the basis of the discriminated shape.
