Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide diagnosis, by a program, of a fundamental cause of a problem in a computer system. SOLUTION: Events are monitored in an operating system to log-record at least a part of these events in a log file. In response to the detection of an error state, a diagnosis module is called. The diagnosis module makes inquiries to the log file, correlates events involved in the diagnosis of this problem, and evaluate the inquiry result to specify a fundamental cause. When the fundamental cause of this problem is diagnosed, a solution module corresponding to the fundamental cause is called so that this problem can be solved by a program. The calling of the diagnosis and solution modules can employ a policy rule as a condition. Further, log-record, diagnosis and solution modules can be automatically updated as required.
