SOLUTION: This engraved letter recognition device A has: an image reading means 1 for reading an image of the engraved letter Km engraved in the object T as image data; an image processing means 2 for extracting the image data read by the image reading means 1 as an outline image, and deciding an area probably including the letter; and a letter identification means 3 for identifying the outline image as the letter on the basis of the outline image extracted by the image processing means 2.
