Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for producing an unsaturated aldehyde such as methacrolein by gas phase catalytic oxidation of an olefin such as isobutylene. SOLUTION: This catalyst contains molybdenum, bismuth, iron, and cesium and, depending on conditions, other metals such as oxides of tungsten, cobalt, nickel, antimony, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus. This catalyst also has a specific relative amount ratio of cesium to bismuth, that of iron to bismuth, that of bismuth to molybdenum, and that of bismuth, iron, and cesium to molybdenum is represented by the following general formula. However, the general formula of the above is MozBiaFecCsgOx, wherein "a" is in the range from 0.1 to 1.5, "c" is in the range from 0.2 to 5.0, "g" is in the range from 0.1 to 1.5, and "x" is determined according to the valence of the component.
