Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photonic crystal that is easy to manufacture and that has a two-dimensional periodic structure capable of having a complete band gap relative to a TE wave and a TM wave. SOLUTION: The photonic crystal is structured such that, with a rectangle having a length x1 for the short side X1 and a length y1 for the long side Y1 as a unit grid L, on a plane where adjacent four unit grids L are arranged to share one corner, a columnar first dielectric area having a rectangular cross section with a length x2 for the short side X2 and a length y2 for the long side Y2 is arranged on the short side X1 and the long side Y1 of each rectangular unit grid L. In the photonic crystal, the first dielectric area is arranged so that the middle point of the short side X1 and that of the long side Y1 roughly coincide with the center of the rectangular cross section, while the long sides Y2 of each first dielectric area are nearly parallel to each other. In addition, setting is such that x1:y1=1: nearly 31/2, and that x1:x2:y2=1:0.133:0.48 to 1:0.158:0.58. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
