Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotation angle detection device and a rotation angle detection method which reduce power consumption. SOLUTION: A magnetic resistance element 11 outputs a signal changing in one period at every rotation at a prescribed angle of a steering shaft, repeatedly following rotation of a rotator. A microcomputer 12 calculates the rotation angle of the steering shaft based on a signal period and a signal value from the magnetic resistance element 11. The microcomputer 12 operates the magnetic resistance element 11 in a prescribed basic sampling period in the engine stop state, and changes the sampling period according to the rotation speed of the steering shaft so that a constant rotation angle can be always detected when the rotation of the steering shaft is detected.
