Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for cleaning an aluminum support by which a lithographic printing plate of a successful quality can be manufactured regardless of the grade of the lithographic printing plate. SOLUTION: This method employs a water wash process consisting of two or more stages to water-wash an aluminum web W to be used for a thermal digital plate. The water wash process uses a cleaning system 10 which reserves well water L1 in a first water wash tank 12 and pure water L2 in a second water wash tank 14. The conveying speed and the like of the aluminum web W is previously set in the way that a calcium ion concentration remaining on the surface of the aluminum web W after cleaning it with the pure water L2 in the second water wash tank 14 falls within a favorable range without being influenced by the calcium ion concentration contained in the well water L1. Consequently, it is possible to manufacture the thermal digital plate of a successful quality regardless of grade even in case various grades of the thermal digital plates are manufactured by forming various kinds of photosensitive layers on the aluminum web W after cleaning.
