Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a practical illuminator using a light emitting diode or the like as an auxiliary light source, and a projection type video display device using the illuminator. SOLUTION: An auxiliary light source 12 is constituted by arranging LED chips 12a... emitting red light in an array state and also arranging lens cells 12b... for collimating light on the light emitting side of the respective LED chips 12a. The LED chips 12a are arranged corresponding to the respective lenses of a pair of fly-eye lenses 2, so that the individual pair of lenses guides the light emitted from the LED chips 12a to all the surfaces of liquid crystal light valves 31, 32 and 33. A compositing mirror 13 transmits white light emitted from a main light source 11, reflects the light emitted from the light source 12 and composites the white light and the auxiliary light emitted from both light sources 11 and 12 and guides it to a pair of fly-eye lenses 2.
