Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce in size, improve a starting property and make a service life longer. SOLUTION: A discharge lamp lighting device comprises a load circuit composed of a high-pressure discharge lamp La; a DC-DC conversion circuit 1 for supplying DC power; a DC-DC conversion control circuit 2 for controlling the DC-DC conversion circuit 1; an LC series resonance circuit 3A; a DC-AC conversion circuit 4 for converting a DC voltage from the DC-DC conversion circuit 1 into a square wave AC voltage and apply it to the resonance circuit 3A; a DC-AC conversion control circuit 5A for controlling the DC-AC conversion circuit 4; and a high-voltage generating circuit 6 for applying a high-pressure pulse voltage for lighting the lamp La to the load circuit. The control circuit 5A reduces the frequency of the square wave step by step and sets the frequency at least in the 1st step to around 1/an odd number of the resonance frequency of the resonance circuit 3A during a starting period.
