Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting system capable of obtaining practical characteristics, even though it uses solid-state light-emitting elements, such as semiconductor laser devices exhibiting a Gaussian distribution, and to provide a projection type image display using the same. SOLUTION: The lighting system 1 comprises a light source consists of a plurality of LD (laser diode) chips 11...; a parallelizing lens 12 provided on the light-outgoing side of each LD chip 11; and a pair of fly-eye lens 13a, 13b. Even if the LD chips 11 exhibit a distribution in the emitted light intensity, each light beam of a plurality of light beams in a light-receiving area (lens group 13a) is led to a liquid display panel 3 together, the distribution of emitted light intensity is dispersed, consequently brightness of each point on a liquid crystal display panel 3 can be equalized.
