Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To notify of the defective state to the user before the abnormality is actually generated in the data reproduction state by a defective pickup or a defective disk. SOLUTION: By a system controller 30, an average gain adjustment values with respect to an RF signal reproduced by the optical pickup 12 is obtained from a DVD disk 10 and stored in an average gain memory 33. The defective state of the optical pickup 12 is detected in accordance with the obtained average gain, and also by means of detecting the defective state of a certain DVD disk 10 in accordance with the gain adjustment value obtained when this DVD disk 10 is mounted and reproduced.
