Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method of a sulfonated polyarylene that is safe and enables easy control of the amount and position of sulfonic groups introduced in the polymer; to provide the sulfonated polyarylene; to provide a polyarylene and an aromatic sulfonate derivative that are suitably employed in the production method; and to provide a macromolecular solid electrolyte that comprises the sulfonated polyarylene, and a proton conductive membrane. SOLUTION: The aromatic sulfonate derivative is represented by formula (1) [wherein, X is a halogen atom except fluorine, -OSO3CH3or -OSO3CF3; Y is a divalent organic group; A is -(CH2)m- or -(CF2)m- (m is an integer of 1-10); and R is a 4-20C hydrocarbon group]. The production method of the sulfonated polyarylene comprises subjecting an aromatic compounds at least containing the aromatic sulfonate derivative represented by formula (1) to a coupling polymerization, and hydrolyzing the obtained polyarylene.
