Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode structure for a solid polymer fuel cell which restrains deterioration of performance even when fuel is in a state of short supply. SOLUTION: A cathode catalysis layer contains a foaming material, and a cathode diffusion layer is made to contain carbon particles having a moisture absorption rate of less than 150 cc/g at 60°C under saturated vapor pressure, and an anode diffusion layer is made to contain carbon particles having a moisture absorption rate of not less than 150 cc/g at 60°C under saturated vapor pressure, and it is so made that the moisture absorption rate of the anode diffusion layer at 60°C is 40 to 85%, pressure difference between the anode diffusion and the cathode diffusion layers measured by a pressure difference measuring method is 60 to 120 mmaq, penetration resistance measured by a penetration resistance method is 5 mΩ or less, and percentage of the quantity of electric charge of a catalytic substance of the cathode catalysis layer existing in a proton conduction passage from a solid polymer electrolyte film, against the quantity of electric charge of the total catalytic substance existing in the cathode catalysis layer, measured by a cyclic voltammetric method is to be not less than 15%.
