Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable filter that can be suitably used as a gain equalizer for the fluctuations of a gain spectrum of a light magnifying part, wherein gain maximum or minimum occurs due to particular wavelength within a prescribed wavelength band to fluctuate a maximum value or a minimum value. SOLUTION: This variable filter 100 is provided with a loss variable filter 110 and a fixed filter 120. The loss variable filter 110 has a transmission spectrum whose loss becomes maximum by the particular wavelength within the prescribed wavelength band, and the maximum value of the loss is variable. The fixed filter 120 has a transmission spectrum whose loss becomes minimum by the particular wavelength. A transmissivity becomes almost constant within the prescribed wavelength band in the entire transmission spectrums obtained by puttting together the transmission spectrum of the loss variable filter 110 and the transmission spectrum of the fixed filter 120 at any value within the variable range of the loss maximum value of the transmission spectrum of the loss variable filter 110.
