PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter device which can be equipped with numbers of pleat filter elements thereto, appropriately stop an excess element-set part without causing trouble, and set up an optimum treatment capacity easily without causing trouble even when a treatment capacity is changed, and a method of using the device. SOLUTION: In the filter device and its use method, the filter device is provided with a filtration column in which numbers of cylindrical filter elements can be installed in parallel and receiving members for supporting both ends of the filter element, a support plate. The number of the pleat filter elements is made to correspond to a filtration capacity, and the pleat filter elements are installed in turn from a position on the outside in the radial direction close to the inside surface of the filtration column toward the inside. In this way, the column is divided into an outside region in the radial direction in which the pleat filter elements are installed and an inside region in the radial direction in which the elements are not installed, and a receiving member part is plugged in the inside region.
