Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion method in a coke oven which reduces the amount of carbon deposited at the upper part of a carbonization chamber thereby to decrease the frequency of clogging with which an extrusion machine is stopped at the time of coke extrusion. SOLUTION: In the combustion method in a coke oven where a combustion chamber 2 of a fuel gas composed of a number of flues 3 and the carbonization chamber 1 for dry-distilling coal are alternatively arranged, a fuel gas outlet 32 is provided at a partition wall 31 between the flues 3 and a fuel gas outlet 34 is positioned at the bottom part 33 of the flues 3. Thus, coal is dry-distilled while controlling the temperature of the upper part of the combustion chamber 2 lower than the temperature of the lower part of the combustion chamber 2 by supplying from the bottom part 33 of the combustion chamber 2 a part of the total amount of heat to be supplied to the combustion chamber 2 by burning the fuel gas at these fuel gas outlets 32 and 34 thereby to decrease the amount of carbon deposited on the upper part of the carbonization chamber 1.
