Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing control device for an internal combustion engine capable of precluding shocks and/or exhaust gas deterioration by controlling the valve timing even in the case poor performance of distinguishing the cylinder occurs. SOLUTION: The valve timing control device of the internal combustion engine is equipped with an actuator 113 to change the relative position between at least an intake or exhaust cam shaft and a crank shaft, a cylinder distinguishing means to perform distinction of the cylinder from the sensing results of a crank angle sensor 115 and a cam angle sensor 112, a valve timing sensing means to sense the valve timing from the sensing results of the crank angle sensor 115 and cam angle sensor 112, and an OCV 114 to control the actuator 113 on the basis of the sensing value of the valve timing sensing means, wherein the control by the valve timing control means is conducted in the neutral point when the distinction of the cylinder by the cylinder distinguishing means is in the non-determined condition.
