Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem with a conventional combustion state detection device that a misfire cannot be detected by an ion current generated successively to an exhaust stroke. SOLUTION: This combustion state detection device of an internal combustion engine comprises an ECU performing a fuel injection and an ignition control based on the information on the rotation of an angle sensor, an ignition coil generating a high-voltage for ignition based on drive signals from the ECU, a bias means for applying a bias voltage for ion current detection to an ignition plug, a misfire detection (or knock detection) means for detecting the misfire (or detecting knocking) based on the ion current detected by the ion current detection means, a misfire determination means for determining the misfire based on output signals from the misfire detection means, and a detection period limiting means for limiting the detection period of the ion current treated by the misfire detection means or the knock detection means.
