PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for capturing a fingerprint image, a device for inputting the fingerprint image, and its program for allowing a user to judge and correct the fluctuation of the density and position of an image due to how to place the user's finger in a real time. SOLUTION: In this fingerprint image inputting device having a fingerprint image inputting means for inputting a fingerprint image, and for outputting quantized fingerprint image data and an input supporting means, when the fingerprint image data are inputted, the input supporting means calculates vertical and horizontal projection distribution and the density distribution of image data. Then, the input supporting means obtains the upper and lower edges and right and left edges of the fingerprint image based on the vertical and horizontal projection distribution, and judges whether or not the coordinates of each edge are within preliminarily decided specific values. Then, the input supporting means judges whether or not the shape of the density distribution is similar to the preliminarily decided optimal shape of the density distribution. The input supporting means prepares a correction message corresponding to the result of judgement, and notices it to an operator until the optimal fingerprint image is obtained. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
