Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization retention photonic crystal fiber for easily discriminating a polarization surface by enlarged observation using a microscope or the like. SOLUTION: Since a pair of pores 4b that oppose each other by sandwiching a core 1 in six pores 4a and 4b adjacent to the core 1 has a diameter larger than the other four pores 4a, a polarization retention photonic crystal fiber 10 has a polarization-retaining function. An overladding section 3 is present outside a cladding section 2 comprising a number of pores 4a and 4b at the periphery of the core 1, and a pair of marking sections 5 is formed at positions that oppose each other by sandwiching the core 1 at the overcladding section 3. The marking section 5 is a hole, and can be visually recognized at a position that differs from the cladding section 2 when viewed from the upper side in a figure, thus discriminating the direction of the polarization surface of the polarization retention photonic crystal fiber 10.
