Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical scanner and a display which can be made thin and small-sized. SOLUTION: The optical scanner and display have an optical modulating element 10 having optical modulating elements which are linearly arranged, an imaging optical system 20 which transmits luminous flux from the optical modulating elements 10 as object light to linearly image the luminous flux on an image plane 60, a deflecting means 40 which deflects luminous flux projected from the imaging optical system 20 to a direction crossing the arrangement direction of the optical modulating elements at right angles, and a scanning optical system 50 which is arranged in the course of the luminous flux deflected by the deflecting means 40. The optical modulating means comprises a lighting optical system and a non-self-luminous type and may selectively transmit only light corresponding to a selected signal to the imaging optical system. A reflection type BBLV (bath-end fixed beam light value) may be used as a non-self- luminous type optical modulating element. The optical modulating means may be a self-luminous type optical modulating element. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
