Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion compensator which can flatten a transmission band of light or have a desired characteristic. SOLUTION: Light inputted from a single-mode fiber is linearly converged by a line focuser and converged on a VIPA element 10. Light outputted from the VIPA element 10 is transmitted through a spatial filter 13 having a specified transmission loss characteristic and converged by a focusing lens 11 on a mirror 12. The mirror 12 reflects the light to make the light incident on the VIPA element through the focusing lens 11 and spatial filter 13 again, so that the light is re-inputted to the single-mode fiber through the line focuser. The insertion loss wavelength characteristic of the wavelength dispersion compensator using the VIPA element 10 is optimized by being superposed on the transmission loss characteristic of the spatial filter 13.
