PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a non-chlorine type barrier film for food packaging material low in oxygen permeability and humidity permeability, having high barrier properties. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the coating composition for the barrier film includes a step for mixing a metal alkoxide and a vinyl polymer having a hydroxyl group, and a step for treating the reaction liquid formed by mixing with ultrasonic waves. In this manufacturing method, the step for treating the reaction liquid with ultrasonic waves is performed after a hydrolyzing catalyst is added to the reaction liquid. Thereafter, it is preferable to add a condensation reaction catalyst. The coating composition for the barrier film manufactured by this method and the barrier film having a barrier layer formed by coating at least one surface of a plastic substrate material with the coating composition are also disclosed.
