PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera for paintings and calligraphic works for smoothly executing presentation. SOLUTION: The camera for paintings and calligraphic works of this invention comprises: an image pickup section 1 that picks up the image of an opaque original to provide an output of digital image data; a frame memory 2 for storing the digital image data from the section 1 to apply scan conversion to the data; a digital/analog converter section 3 that converts the digital image data subjected to scan conversion from the frame memory 2 into an analog image signal; a video output section 4 that amplifies the analog image data from the digital/analog converter section 3; an operation section 5 that updates the frame memory 2 for a time equivalent to one frame when being operated and generates a command signal to stop update after that; a control section 6 for generating a control signal of the frame memory 2 on the basis of the command signal from the operation section 5; and a timing signal generating section 7 that generates a timing signal to control the frame memory 2 on the basis of the control signal from the control section 6.
