Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve catalyst conversion of a gaseous pollutant. SOLUTION: The device includes a porous catalyst retaining member. The porous catalyst retaining member has a first surface and a second surface. The first surface permits inflow of the exhaust gas, and the second surface permits outflow of the exhaust gas. Preferably, the first surface and the second surface are positioned on sides of a substrate opposite to each other. The method contains a step of bringing the exhaust gas into contact with the catalyst. The catalyst includes the porous catalyst retaining member with perforated structure. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
