PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide physical property values giving excellent chipping resistance and a coating material having excellent chipping resistance in a method for forming a multilayer coating film by 3C1B. SOLUTION: In the method for forming a coating film by coating a first color base coating (A), a second color base coating (B), and a clear coating (C) by the wet on wet method, and then crosslinking and curing the multilayer coating film comprising the three layers by heating the layers at the same time, the cured coating film at -20 of the first color base paint (A) has a Young's modulus (a) of 3,000 MPa or more and a breaking energy (b) of 2×10-3J or more. In the physical property values of the first color base coating (A), the molecular weight between crosslinks (c) is 300 g/mol or less, and the bond strength (d) between the first color base coating (A) and an undercoating film is 13-18 N.
