PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a servo control method for accurately controlling the position of a magnetic head in the width direction as to a servo signal written onto a magnetic tape even when the writing position of a servo pattern in the longitudinal direction varies. SOLUTION: The servo control method controls the position of the magnetic head in the width direction in accordance with the servo signal. The writing side of the servo signal includes a writing step for writing each of servo signals SS1, SS2 in which servo patterns SP1, SP2 are vertically asymmetrical and also the servo patterns SP1, SP2 of two servo tracks ST1, ST2 are vertically symmetrical. The recording/reproducing side of the data signal includes a reading step for reading each of the servo signals SS1, SS2 in parallel and a position setting step for setting the position of the magnetic head in the width direction in accordance with one servo signal SS1 and another servo signal SS2 out of the servo signals SS1, SS2 which have been read in the reading step.
