PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for the measurement of the profile of a roll wherein the profile can be measured simply and precisely in a state that the pressure roll as a measuring object is set, without removing it from a rolling machine. SOLUTION: In the measuring method, a reference wire is stretched and installed in the lengthwise direction of the roll, a noncontact-type displacement gage which is run in the slightly upper part of the reference wire is installed, while the displacement gage is being moved on a running rail, a distance up to the reference wire from the displacement gage and a distance difference, up to the top part of the roll from the displacement gage are measured alternately over the whole length of the roll, and the profile over the whole length of the roll is obtained, on the basis of respective obtained measuring points. In the apparatus, the running rail 2, the reference wire 3 and the contact-type displacement gage 4, which is run in a zigzag shape in the upper part of the reference wire 3 while being moved on the running rail 2, are installed on a base 1.
