Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress a blackening phenomenon and to prolong the service life of a fluorescent lamp in the case of switching internal electrodes and external electrodes of the fluorescent lamp to emit light. SOLUTION: An image reader that uses the fluorescent lamp 1 having, as a light source for emitting light to an original image, a round tube 2 with fluorescence material that emits light by discharge inside, a pair of internal electrodes A and B arranged inside the tube 2, and a pair of external electrodes (a) and (b) arranged outside the tube 2, and switches to an external electrode mode by applying voltage to the pair of external electrodes (a) and (b) and an internal electrode mode by applying voltage to the pair of internal electrodes A and B for use, is provided with a lamp controller 6 for controlling electric potential VIN with respect to the pair of internal electrodes A and B and electrode potential VH of the external electrode with the higher electric potential between the external electrodes (a) and (b) to a condition that is VIN>VH or VIN VH in the external electrode mode. |
