PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently, reliably and automatically inspect meters for the consumptions of electricity, gas, water, etc., by using a device which is usable as an ordinary portable information terminal device when meter inspection is not performed. SOLUTION: In the meter inspection system, a meter inspection device 100 which inspects the meters for the consumptions of electricity, etc., and a portable information terminal device 101 with a radio communication function are connected by a connection device 102 so that both the devices can send and receive data; and the meter inspection device 100 inspects the meters for the consumptions at specific time or at a meter inspection request from the portable information terminal device 101 and sends meter inspection information to a predetermined management center 150 by using the portable information terminal device 101 connected by the connection device 102. If the portable information terminal device 101 is not connected to the connection device 102 when the meter inspection information is sent, that is reported to the user who carries the portable information terminal.
