Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing the deterioration of the characteristic color of a cellulosic fiber caused by a fluorescent brightener in a detergent. SOLUTION: The discoloration of a cellulosic fiber caused by a fluorescent brightener is prevented by treating the cellulosic fiber with a polycarboxylic acid or a polycarboxylic acid salt having at least one free carboxy group. The polycarboxylic acid or the polycarboxylic acid salt having at least one free carboxy group is at least one compound selected from butanetetracarboxylic acid, citric acid, malic acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid and their salts.
