Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pointing device with which a portable electronic device is operated by a method like the conventional mouse and no accessory equipment is necessary to be carried by providing the portable electronic device with mouse-like capabilities. SOLUTION: A selection and control method for menu items is provide for the portable electronic device including a menu display (14) having a plurality of menu items (18) and a menu item pointer movable by a user to highlight particular menu items. A relative movement between the portable electronic device and an imaging surface (106) is detected, a first set of movement data indicating a first relative movement between the portable electronic equipment and the imaging surface is generated, the menu item pointer is moved based on the first set of movement data to highlight a first menu item (18A), a second set of movement data indicating a second relative movement between the portable electronic device and the imaging surface is generated and the first menu item is selected based on the second set of movement data.
