Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system which improves the throughput of a system by utilizing the asymmetric characteristics of a DMD mirror without the wasteful use of the light of a light source. SOLUTION: This projection system has the light source, an optical modulator which has a stronger beam permissible angle in one direction and an anamorphic optical system which is disposed between the light source and the optical modulator along an optical path. The anamorphic optical system imparts a higher magnification along a first axis and a lower magnification along a second axis orthogonal with the first axis. The section axis is aligned to intersect the direction where the beam permissible angle is stronger.
