Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and efficiently infusibilize a pitch-based fiber. SOLUTION: This pitch-based fiber 6 is infusibilized by stacking air-permeable trays 5a in which the pitch-based fiber is placed in plural steps and feeding a heated oxidizing gas (particularly air) to stacked trays 5. The air-permeable tray 5a has a structure which is air-permeable from the sides, the upper side and lower side and the pitch-based fiber 6 may be infusibilized while carrying the stacked trays 5. The heated oxidizing gas may be fed from the sides, the upper side and the lower side of the stacked trays 5. Carbon fiber may be produced by further carrying out carbonization or activation treatment of infusibilized pitch-based fiber obtained by the above method.
