Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide brass which has an excellent cutting-finished face even if it is cut at any cutting rates from the low rates to the high rate. SOLUTION: The brass having a smooth cutting-finished face has an apparent Zn content of 37 to 50 wt.% and an Sn content of 0.5 to 7 wt.%, and has a crystal structure of α+β+γ or α+γ or α+β; wherein, the ratio of the α phase is 20 to 95%, the ratio of the β phase is 0 to 80%, and the ratio of the γ phase is 0 to 40%. Alternatively, the brass having a smooth cutting-finished face has an apparent Zn content of 37 to 50 wt.% and an Sn content of 0.5 to 7 wt.%, and has a crystal structure of α+β+γ or α+γ or α+β; wherein, the ratio of the α phase is 20 to 95%, the ratio of the β phase is 0 to 80%, and the ratio of the γphase is 0 to 40%, and is subjected to cold working of 5 to 90%.
