Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder and a method of operating recovery of a recording head wherein unwilling collision of a recording head with a recovery means is avoided so that the damages thereof can be prevented and the recording head is positioned on a position for the recovery operation of the recovery means, and then the recovery operation is surely performed. SOLUTION: The head recovery means 59 performs the recovery operation of the recording head 3 at a recovery operation position which is opposite to the head recovery means 59. A carriage lock 120 blocks the recording head 3 not to be moved to the recovery operation position under a predetermined condition. The carriage lock 120 is engaged with a hole 2a of the carriage 2 during the recovery operating time by the head recovery means 59 so that the carriage 2 and the recording head 3 are positioned to the recovery operation position.
