Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflective end face type surface wave device in which operating frequency can be increased easily and a desired band width can be obtained easily. SOLUTION: In the reflective end face type surface wave device comprising at least one interdigital transducer 3 formed on the major surface 2a of a piezoelectric substrate 2 and using end faces 2c and 2d as reflective end faces, a surface wave principally comprising a longitudinal wave is employed. Assuming the energy intensity of the entire surface wave being excited is 100%, SH wave component and SV wave component other than the longitudinal wave component are preferably 20% or less, respectively. More preferably, the longitudinal wave component is 70% or above assuming the energy intensity of the entire surface wave being excited is 100%.
