Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a splice welder capable of obtaining a high quality splice while preventing a side face splicing. SOLUTION: In order to form a workpiece nest having a predetermined width, an anvil 26 which is driven in horizontal and vertical directions by an actuator 28, a gathering tool 30 which is moved in a horizontal direction by a mother screw 32, a tip guide 12 and a welding tip 18 are combined with each other in a displaceable manner so as to have their meeting surfaces. The width of the workpiece nest is sufficient to receive only at least one vertical column of workpieces to be welded, so as to produce a vertical splice. The ultrasonic welder further has a controller controlling a starting position of tooling, which forms the predetermined width of the workpiece nest, and displacing at least one of the tools 30, which form side faces of the nest in reciprocal and time controlled manner. The displaceable tool 30 is brought back to its starting position corresponding to the predetermined width of the workpiece nest before a new bundle of workpieces is loaded therein.
