Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To largely reduce the number of switching active elements and image signal memory elements necessary for controlling the image luminance of a display provided with backlight. SOLUTION: A large number of pixel luminance control elements (photo- cathodes and liquid crystal cells or the like) for controlling the luminance for every pixel are divided into the blocks of pixel luminance control elements to be controlled by gate signals from the same gate line and image signals from the same image signal line, respectively, and the pixel luminance control elements belonging to each pixel luminance control element block are controlled by the above same image signal and gate signal via the individual switching active elements and image signal memory elements for every block, and the operation timing and operation period of each pixel luminance control element in each pixel luminance control element block is commonly and selectively controlled by the individual address signals made to be related to the gate signals. |
