Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element having a protection membrane that can be formed in a short time and is prevented from making a pin hole. SOLUTION: A laminate body laminated in the order of a positive electrode 20, an organic layer 30 containing a light emitting layer 32 and a negative electrode, and a lamellar body 20-50 made of partition walls 50 that separate the negative electrodes 40, are formed on a substrate 10. A protection membrane 60 that protects by covering the lamellar body 20-50 is formed on the substrate 10. And this protection membrane 60 has a thickness which is same as or more than the thickness of the partition wall 50 that is the maximum thickness of the lamellar body, and is made a two ply structure laminated in the order of a first membrane 61 and second membrane 62 from the substrate 10 side. The second membrane 62 is thinner than the first membrane 61 and is made to have a high water vapor-poof function.
