Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an N-acetyl-para-aminophenol by bringing 4- hydroxyacetophenone oxime into contact with a Beckmann rearrangement catalyst in an alkali alkanoate reactional solvent. SOLUTION: 4-Hydroxyacetophenone is reacted with a hydroxylamine salt and a base to prepare the 4-hydroxyacetopheonone oxime and the resultant oxime product is then extracted from the resultant reactional mixture with a substantially water-immiscible solvent. The oxime and the substantially water- immiscible solvent are brought into contact with the Beckmann rearrangement catalyst to produce the N-acetyl-para-aminophenol. The formation of a by- product in the ester solvent is limited by using the new Beckmann rearrangement catalyst.
