Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a frame number detector having the lower possibility that a frame counter outputs a wrong frame number even if a synchronizing signal from a DVD, etc., is erroneously detected and the frame number corresponding to the combination of the changes of this synchronizing signal type exists. SOLUTION: The read frame number is specified and outputted in a synchronizing number encoding section 6. The count numbers are made to run free and are outputted in first and second frame counters 7 and 13. A state variable is changed up and down according to whether the signal S5 and the signal S7 coincide or not in a state detecting counter 9. The signal S5 is reflected on the signal S7 when the state variable is minimum and the specification of the frame number is not possible in the synchronizing number encoding section 6. The signal S7 is reflected on the signal S13 when the state variable turns maximum.
