PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To certainly perform the changeover of a selector valve of an automatic transmission. SOLUTION: This range changeover device 1 is equipped with a detent mechanism 8 to retain in respective shift positions, range selector valve operating means 5 and 7 capable of changing over a selector valve to change the shift range between shift positions 5d, 5e, 5f, 5g, 5h, driving force stopping means 31 and 18, or 31 and 19, to hinder the driving force from a drive motor 12 to drive the range selector valve operating means from being transmitted to the range selector valve operating means, stop control means 28 and 20 to control the driving force stopping means so that holding is generated in the specified shift position of the detent mechanism upon sensing the positions of the range selector valve operating means, environment sensing means 24 and 27 to sense the environment of the drive motor, and a rotation controlling means 20 to control the drive motor to the specified revolving speed in accordance with the environmental situation sensed by the environment sensing means.
