Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carboxylic acid by a direct one-step reaction operation by oxidizing a lower olefin with an oxygen- containing gas. SOLUTION: The lower olefin is reacted with the oxygen-containing gas as an oxidant in the presence of a catalyst comprising gold carried by a carrier in an aqueous solution. By using the gold catalyst, the carboxylic acid can be produced effectively and industrially advantageously in comparison with a conventional palladium-based catalyst.
