SOLUTION: This method for producing a 2,2'-dihydroxybiphenyl of formula (II) (R1 is a hydrogen atom, a 1-8C alkyl group, a 5-8C cycloalkyl group, a 6-12C alkylcycloalkyl group, a 7-12C aralkyl group or a phenyl group which may be substituted with a 1-8C alkyl group; R2 is a 1-8C alkyl group, a 5-8C cycloalkyl group, a 6-12C alkylcycloalkyl group, a 7-12C aralkyl group or a phenyl which may be substituted with a 1-8C alkyl group; R3 is a hydrogen atom or a 1-8C alkyl group) comprises reacting a phenol of formula (I) with 0.48-0.55 mol based on the phenol of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a base.
