Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an active matrix display containing a liquid crystal mixture that can attain a high maximum transmittance, a high contrast, and a threshold voltage constant in a wide temperature range, has an I-N*-SmC* phase sequence, a specified spontaneous polarization value in the drive temperature range, and a specified pitch at least one temperature in a nematic or cholesteric phase, and contains a plurality of specified compounds. SOLUTION: An active matrix display containing a chiral smectic liquid crystal mixture, wherein the liquid crystal mixture has an I-N*-SmC* phase sequence, a spontaneous polarization value <40n C/cm2 at the drive temperature range, and a pitch >10 μm at least one temperature in a nematic or cholesteric phase and contains at least one compound selected from each of at least two of groups I, II, and III of substances and 0.1-50 wt.%, based on the liquid crystal mixture, at least one compound selected from group IV of substances.
