Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fix the satisfactory viewing angle characteristics of a normally black mode and to make high quality image display possible by specifying the twist angle of the film to be almost proportional to the film thickness. SOLUTION: Optically compensate film is produced from the film material of a photosetting low mol.wt. liquid crystal showing optically positive uniaxial property and is composed of at least a liquid crystal layer, obtained by forming twisted nematic alignment of the low mol.wt. liquid crystal as the main component of the film material in the liquid crystal state and fixing the alignment by photosetting reaction. In this method, the twisting angle of the film is specified to be in almost proportional relation with the film thickness. As the photosetting low mol.wt. liquid crystal showing optically positive uniaxial property as the main component of the film material, for example, a liquid crystal having biphenyl derivatives, phenylbenzoate derivatives or the like as the basic structure can be cited. As the low mol.wt. liquid crystal, either a lyotropic or thermotropic liquid crystal can be used.
