Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a display device which maintains good viewing angle characteristics and which can display a high-quality image, without decreasing the yield by disposing a driving liquid crystal cell and an optical compensation film which keeps twisted nematic in alignment with the twist angle, almost proportionally with the film thickness between two polarizing plates. SOLUTION: This device is composed of at least a driving liquid crystal cell (TN cell), upper and lower polarizing plates, and (optical) compensation film. The driving liquid crystal cell used is composed of a pair of transparent substrates, having electrodes and a nematic liquid crystal which forms twist alignment, when no voltage is applied. The optical compensation film used is composed of at least a liquid crystal layer prepared by keeping the twisted nematic alignment. In this method, the twisting angle in the film is specified to be in almost proportional relation with the film thickness. The optical compensation film can be formed from a film material, consisting essentially of a liquid crystal which can maintain desired twisted nematic alignment in the liquid crystal state. For example, a liquid crystal showing optically positive anisotropy can be used. |
